Petitions that need your help

Collectively we have all been singing as many petitions as we can as they are an amazing way of getting our voices heard and helping out so many different individual causes - and best of all they are free so are accessible to anyone with the internet. Plus they only take 20 seconds to fill out! Please remember when signing petitions that you must confirm each signature from your email account - if you do not confirm them, they won't be completed. Here are some petitions from all over the world that still need attention for you to sign. (UK-specific petitions will have a ** next to them)

Investigate bullying at BroadoakSports College(Hazel Wood High School)& GMP investigation. "This petition comes in light of the tragic death of 12 year old Shukri Yahya Abdi, a Somali refugee who came to the UK alongside her mother and siblings for a better quality of life and safety and instead was a victim of bullying at the above named school, where inaction and potential failures by staff to protect this student from her alleged bullies may have inadvertently led to her death last week."

Justice for Andile Mchunu (Bobo)

"Andile Mchunu (Bobo) was beaten by a group of men for allegedly stealing alcohol and money. His sister came to fetch him after it was reported that he was being beaten but she was told to go fetch him some clothes and when she came back from fetching the clothes she was told that Andile has escaped. Which is hard to believe because a video of him unconscious has been circulating and a person in his state would’ve never been able to escape. And now the boy is nowhere to be found. As a community of Hambanathi we need justice to be served for Andile Mchunu (Bobo)"

Exonerate Eric Riddick

"We are three undergraduate students at Georgetown University working with Georgetown's Prisons and Justice Initiative and the Igwe Firm on this case. We are also working alongside Eric's family and legal team with the goal of exonerating him after he has served over 27 years for a crime that he did not commit. Please sign this petition to help us pressure Philadelphia's District Attorney Larry Krasner to give Eric the justice he deserves!"

Justice for Elijah Nichols

"Elijah is being punished for defending himself against 3 attackers, which is unfair. The judge who sentenced Elijah went over the 1st time offenders guidelines of 3.5 years to 8 years. This judge is known for handing down harsher sentences to  people of color. The day that Elijah was sentenced the judge told him that " I am going to use you as an example". The commonwealth prosecuting attorney asked the judge for a sentence of 5 years which the judge disregarded. Elijah has never been in trouble, this is his first offense. The judge did not take any of that into consideration. While Elijah spoke and his character witnesses spoke, which consisted of a police office whom is a former Carolina Panther, a Doctor of Theology, his mother and grandfather. The judge closed his eyes and nodded off showing his disinterest in their statements."

Demand a retrial for Angel Bumpass wrongfully convicted 13 year old with a life sentence

"13 YEAR OLD FEMALE FALSELY CONVICTED OF MURDER

On October 3, 2019, tens years later Angel Bumpass was found guilty of a murder that was committed in 2009, by a jury after only 4 hours and 30 minutes approximately of deliberation."

Justice for Crystal Mason

"Texas resident Crystal Mason is one of the most recent victims of voter disenfranchisement, a form of voter suppression that affects more than six million Americans.  On March 28, 2018, Judge Ruben Gonzalez sentenced Ms. Mason to five years in prison for “voting illegally as a felon on probation,” and more recently turned down Ms. Mason’s bid for a new trial. Ms. Mason has always maintained that she was unaware that her name had been purged from electoral roll and was ineligible to vote in the 2016 presidential election.  Ms. Mason and her legal team are working together to appeal the decision to a higher court."

Free Albert N. Wilson! Unjustly Sentenced.

"The case of Albert N. Wilson sounds like something out of an episode of Law and Order SVU. Wilson, a former University of Kansas student, attended a bar with a friend and met a girl who was visiting a family member who attended KU. The two were underage and under the influence when they left the bar to go back to Wilson's apartment. The two didn't have sex, yet, Wilson was given a 12 year sentence, in addition to a lifetime of probation and a mandatory sex offender title for the events that transpired."

Indict the US in the UN for systemic racial discrimination & killing African-Americans!

"The U.S. government has demonstrated that it is unwilling and unable to protect African-Americans from deadly police violence and violent white extremism nor deliver justice when we are viciously massacred. George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery were murdered by deadly police violence and violent white extremist vigilantism, respectively. Thousands of African-American men and women, particularly youth, have been mercilessly killed by police and armed white bands."

Willie Simmons has served 38 years for a $9 robbery

"In 1982, Army veteran Willie Simmons, was prosecuted under Alabama's habitual offender law. Mr. Simmons he had three prior convictions, one of which was for grand larceny. He told reporter Beth Shellbure the other two were for receiving stolen property.  At the time Mr. Simmons had become addicted to drugs while stationed overseas  He was convicted of 1st-degree robbery and sentenced to life without parole for stealing $9. Simmons has spent the last 38 years in prison. This is clearly a case of cruel and unjust punishment. Over the years Mr. Simmons has filed several appeals without any legal assistance. All of his appeals were denied, and based on a 2014 change in Alabama laws, it appears that he has no appeal options left.In the interest of justice Governor Kay Ivey should commute Mr. Simmons sentence."

**Boris Johnson: more protection for Black Trans Women UK

"Black Trans women have a life expectancy of only 35 years. This is outrageous and more needs to be done to ensure their safety. ESPECIALLY in this current climate. There is barely any big/recognised fundraisers or petitions available worldwide and I have really struggled to find anything in the UK. We need our parliament to recognise how much black trans women fear for their lives daily. We need white cis people to speak up with them as their own voices are often shut down or completely ignored. Its actually quite hard to even find reliable statistics (most likely due to lack of recording) so I am being careful with information, but in 2019 26 transgender women in the UK were murdered and the majority of those were POC. We need to do better and so does our government. Black Trans Women are endangered and they urgently need attention and justice! There is so much to be done and it starts with getting our government to recognise there is a problem that desperately needs a solution!"

**Suspend supply of tear gas, rubber bullets and riot shields to the US from the UK

"According to UK policy, UK sales of tear gas, rubber bullets, and riot shields must be suspended immediately for they are being used as tools of “internal repression” I urge you to sign this petition to make your voice heard and let the Parliament know that the people of the UK do not condone, support, nor accept the internal repression of  the people of the United States."

**Boris Johnson: Make Black History Month compulsory to the educational curriculum in the UK

"Students are the most impressionable during their school years and often form their opinions then, to avoid any ignorance and bigotry that some children may begin to develop towards the black community whether that's from racist friends or family. It is important to learn about Black History and unteach this ignorance as some children may not choose to educate themselves and just listen to the people around them and be influenced causing people to hold racist views and pass them down many generations meaning the cycle of racism and systematic oppression will never end."

**UK - Condemn the violence against peaceful BLM protesters by the US police/military

"Peaceful protesters campaigning for the Black Lives Matter movement across the US in the wake of George Floyd’s murder face savage violence from their police forces and National Guard. The vast majority of protesters are doing so unarmed, with non-violent means. Despite this, medical staff, unarmed protesters and journalists recording these events are being indiscriminately attacked, shepherded into groups to have tear gas canisters thrown at them, and being unfairly shot at with rubber bullets. Such actions have led to serious injuries including Linda Tirado - a journalist who was blinded in one eye by a rubber bullet shot at her face whilst she was doing her job and exercising her right to cover the protest - and even deaths, with restaurant owner David McAtee shot dead in Louisville, Kentucky on 1st June."

We aim to update the list of petitions we find as often as we can/create more posts to the hub with more petitions as frequently as possible.
